Most computers slow with age just like an organic creature might slow with time. Over time they fill up with data. The data gets amended and deleted. New data is added. Some files are contaminated with viruses and adware. And so the process continues as your computers hard drive steadily fills up with useful stuff and plenty of unwanted stuff too. Your once pristine computer starts to resemble a digital car junkyard with rusty old car doors, flat tires and bent crankshafts littered all over the place.

So the key to getting the speed back is to have a big clear out. A spring clean you might say. However since your computer probably gets used everyday you need to clean up the innards of your computer (software etc.) more than once a year. More like once a month or quarter.

You can do much of this cleaning yourself. Getting rid of programs that you never use can make a big difference to your computers performance, especially if they start up automatically. Every month or so, un-install programs that you don’t use. Clean out the desktop if it is jam packed with icons.

If you use a Windows operating system then it is advisable to clean the registry database too. This is a file that the computer’s operating system accesses to find the locations of various files, programs and settings within the memory. This will also become corrupted with time as the computer gets older. If it gives the processor bad information then the computer will get slow or even freeze or crash.

You can clean the registry manually but this is not the best use of your time when software can be used that can do the same job that could take you hours in a few minutes.
